Safe car travel

Traveling by car with children is a daily reality for most parents. We drive children to grandparents, school, kindergarten, or go for a weekend trip to the lake. In each of these situations, regardless of the distance, a child who has not yet reached the required height must travel in a car seat. The same rules apply to all parents.

Buying the right car seat

Until recently, the main criterion for whether a child should use a car seat was age (12 years). Now, the obligation depends primarily on the child’s height (the child must be at least 150 cm to travel without a seat). Buying a proper car seat costs at least several hundred zlotys if we want it to be safe and properly fitted. Buying a used car seat is a poor idea, as its wear may reduce effectiveness. The best solution is to visit a specialist store, take the child with you, and have the seat fitted immediately. Regarding installation, choose a seat compatible with your car. The safest way is ISOFIX mounting. If that’s not possible, the seat should be secured with safety belts. Installation is so important that you can be fined not only for the lack of a car seat but also for incorrect mounting. The penalty for failing to provide safety is 150 PLN and 6 penalty points.

Where to install the car seat?

The safest way to transport the youngest children is rear-facing. This reduces braking forces, protecting the child’s neck, spine, and head. If both parents travel together, one can sit next to the child in the back. Remember: when placing a child in the front seat, the passenger airbag must be deactivated. In case of a crash, its activation could be life-threatening.

Is a booster safe?

A booster does not fully replace a car seat and does not provide the same level of safety. However, it is better than nothing – it raises the child so that the seat belts fit correctly (not pressing on the stomach or neck).

Car seat insurance – possible?

If an accident occurs, depending on the policy, compensation for a damaged car seat may be provided. Comprehensive insurance with the right extension may cover it even if stolen (alone or with the car). If the accident was not your fault, compensation can be claimed from the liability policy of the offender. Always replace a damaged seat after any collision or accident.
