Liability insurance (OC) for a child?

Liability insurance (OC) is not only car insurance. Personal liability insurance protects us from the financial consequences of accidents caused by our fault. It is very useful because even a moment of inattention can cause an unintentional accident that results in costly damages. If our fault is obvious, we will be forced to cover the losses. With personal liability insurance, all costs are covered by the insurance, not out of pocket. As parents, there have certainly been or nearly been situations where a child damaged someone’s property or caused harm to someone – even completely unintentionally. In such cases, liability insurance for a child would be very useful. Can such insurance be purchased?

Liability insurance specifically for a child does not exist as an individual product on the market. However, this does not mean that we are defenseless if our child breaks a neighbor’s window. Parents are responsible for their children until the age of 13. For older youth it varies: even if the child can be held accountable for their actions, teenagers under 18 usually do not earn their own living. In such cases, parents still have to pay for the damages. Although liability insurance for a child does not exist, there is a solution – if parents have personal liability insurance, it also covers all damages caused by children.

Such situations are not uncommon. Reckless cycling on a narrow street and scratching a car. Playing football in the yard and breaking a neighbor’s window. Running down a shop aisle and knocking products off the shelves. Pushing a classmate in the school corridor. All these situations happen every day, and with personal liability insurance, parents can handle them without serious consequences.

Caregivers often confuse liability insurance for a child with child accident insurance (NNW). NNW is not liability insurance, but coverage against the consequences of sudden, unfortunate accidents. OC is also not included in NNW coverage – this misconception often leads to misunderstandings and disappointment. To be fully protected against the consequences of accidents caused by yourself or your children, you need to purchase personal liability insurance.
