First of all, movement means health – a long walk will certainly improve our fitness and mood. Our body needs plenty of oxygen to work efficiently and to rest, so it’s a good idea to provide enough fresh air through outdoor activities. Remote work and online learning have limited our activity, but fortunately, the current pandemic situation is much more favorable for spending time outdoors than in previous months – let’s take advantage of it.
Sunlight is a source of vitamin D, which is much lower in our bodies after the cloudy autumn and winter months. The coming months are the perfect opportunity to naturally supplement vitamin D by enjoying the summer sun. Consider walking instead of taking the car or public transport, and after work or school, go home on foot. Vitamin D is essential for stimulating the immune system and maintaining strong bones. During family walks in the sun, always remember sun protection – avoid burns, wear sunglasses and hats, and use sunscreen (at least SPF 50).
Outdoor activity goes hand in hand with sports – or the other way around, as some sports are much more enjoyable outside ;). Summer months can be used for playing football, volleyball, or tennis outdoors. Runners will find that scenic routes in local parks or forests are much more interesting than a treadmill. Encourage children to try new and engaging physical activities during the holidays.
Spending time outdoors doesn’t have to mean long walks and sports – if you have a garden, arrange a space for yourself and your children. Most activities can be moved outside: reading books, coloring, or playing with favorite toys. Time spent in the garden opens up many new play opportunities for children, while parents can enjoy fresh air and peace in their backyard. If you live in an apartment, find the nearest park, bring a blanket, and enjoy the urban greenery!
Lack of sunlight affects our biological rhythm. That’s why during these warm months it’s worth making the most of the sun’s presence, because when autumn arrives and the “autumn blues” hits, we’ll regret every wasted summer day ;).
