How to teach children to care for the environment?

We cannot treat ecology as fashion or a passing trend. We must understand that our common good and the future of our children depend on our actions. Looking at the environment around us, it is easy to conclude that developing good habits and paying attention to pro-ecological actions does not come easily or immediately. That is why it is so important to accustom our children from an early age to sorting waste, saving water, or reducing plastic consumption.

In the first years of life, children learn the most by imitating their parents, which is why it is so important to set a good example and be consistent in our actions. If we teach children about ecology, we must remember that our words and lessons should not remain empty.

For a child to understand why caring for the environment is so important, it is good to teach them sensitivity and empathy from an early age. If a child learns compassion and concern for others, they will quickly see how essential it is to act for the common good. From the beginning, show that nature and the surroundings must be respected, for example by feeding birds or stray animals. Show the child that they are responsible for those smaller and weaker, and do not allow them to crush snails or break branches, just as you do not allow them to fight with peers or pull someone’s hair.

While setting a good example, do not forget to involve children in your actions. In the store, explain to your child why it is better to take tomatoes by weight instead of in a plastic bag. Choose juices in glass bottles rather than plastic ones. It is not enough to sort waste (although that is very important), but above all, it is necessary to start reducing plastic use and choosing environmentally friendly options. During shopping, let the child make decisions: praise them for rejecting plastic packaging and correct them when they choose plastic.

At home, sort the garbage – teach your child to throw waste into bins of the appropriate colors. Try to drink tap water instead of bottled water. Show your child that broken things can be repaired and that clothes can be bought second-hand.

Caring for the environment is not just sad duties and rules to follow – a child will certainly enjoy a bike ride with parents much more than a quick trip by car. Spend more time outdoors, show your child how pleasant it can be in nature, which is worth protecting and caring for.
