Summer holidays are the time many children wait for throughout the whole school year. They are associated with rest, carefree fun, and constant play. However, it is important to remember that summer activities also involve a number of risks that can be avoided by following a few simple rules.
A trip to a summer camp or holiday by the sea is a great opportunity to remind your child of the basic safety rules, especially if it will be their first holiday away from parents.
It is worth reminding your child to apply sunscreen with a high SPF before going to the beach and after each swim, and to wear a cap or scarf on the head. The child should know that under no circumstances should they approach the water without a guardian, even if they only want to walk along the shore.
If you are traveling together, never take your eyes off your child, even for a moment. A moment of parental inattention is one of the most common causes of tragedies by the water. If the child wants to swim, it is not enough to just watch from the shore – when drowning, every second counts.
In good weather, beaches are often crowded. Make sure your child remembers your phone number or has it with them, and knows that in case they get lost, they should ask a lifeguard or a trustworthy person for help, for example, a woman with children.
Polish mountains offer unforgettable views and experiences to hikers, and also allow for active leisure. Who among us has not admired the panorama from Morskie Oko or the sight of Giewont, watching over Zakopane like a sleeping knight? However, let us not forget that even in summer, every mountain trip should be treated with due seriousness, especially if our child is taking their first steps as a hiker.
Remember that mountain weather is changeable – even if it is hot and sunny in the morning, just a few moments later it may change, especially in summer when storms are common. Always check the forecast for the day and dress your child in layers. Also remember about comfortable shoes – nothing discourages walking like blisters on the feet.
Before every trip, carefully check the duration of the route you have planned and the total elevation to be covered. It is worth starting with valley walks or shorter, less demanding trails to familiarize the child with the basics of mountain hiking and awaken in them a love for nature.
No matter where you plan to spend this year’s holiday with your child, remember to get insurance for the whole family. This is important even if you choose a package holiday with a travel agency that provides a basic policy. Pay attention to the insurance scope, the benefit limit for permanent health impairment, and whether the company covers treatment costs in Poland and abroad. After all, from a family trip, we should bring home photos and souvenirs, not a huge bill.
